Structured LITERACY

We Love this stuff.

  • Structured Literacy is
explicit, systematic & sequential/cumulative Instruction. It buildson strengths and skills, from basic to complex. it also emphasizes the telling and showing of literacy rules and patterns for spelling and reading (decoding and encoding) not guessing or based on complex catch phrases and clues.

This means language provided in instruction is familiar and easier for learner comprehension too.

Structured literacy is an evidence-based, inclusive approach to how all children can access the opportunities of literacy and language in printed forms.

  • Structured literacy is inclusive, catering to both neurodivergent and neurotypical classroom needs.

Structured literacy provides explicit, repeated, multi-sensory routines for learning. Ākonga/students get to focus on specific skill and language concepts before applying these to more complex rules, patterns, and word structures. This often means learners with language difficulties and neurodivergent needs (ADHD, AS, FASD) are more able to benefit from this approach to literacy intervention.

As Speech-Therapists, we also love that this means learning happens in a safe, predictable lesson plan or experience. Learners anxiety and stress is reduced, because they can apply skills and strategies rather than guesses.

  • Studies tell us that yes, all children benefit from this approach to learning how to read and write. -Even though over 40% of learners require this type of support in order to achieve such skills.

Whether Pacific Rim Speech provides students with a ready-to-go program or specifically-designed intervention plan that suits their additional speech and language needs, all of our literacy services are provided through the lens of a structured literacy approach.

Nicole is trained specifically in dyslexia literacy learner needs and neurodivergent learner differences. Her training and programming content from Neuhaus is IDA+PLUS accredited in status by the International Dyslexia Association.

Our evidence-based intervention and clinical speech-language experience can support Educators, whānau, and students.
